Border Police Officer Kills Himself After Opening Fire in Netanya Neighborhood

A 20-year-old Border Police officer, David Hoyer Amrani, was killed Saturday evening in Netanya after opening fire in the Kiryat Hasharon residential area. He discharged his weapon in the street and towards homes before engaging security forces who arrived at the scene. Police returned fire, fatally wounding him. No other injuries were reported.

Social media videos showed Amrani, dressed in civilian clothes, carrying a long rifle and a plastic chair in the neighborhood. Initially, residents feared a terrorist attack and barricaded themselves indoors, with one witness recounting hearing screams and gunfire, believing them to be from terrorists. However, the possibility of a terror attack was quickly dismissed.

Amrani joined the Border Police in August 2024 and was previously stationed in Hebron before transferring to the 19th company about eight months ago. The exact circumstances leading to his actions are still under investigation. While some media outlets have suggested post-traumatic stress disorder, no official confirmation has been provided.

Following the incident, Idan Kleiman, president of the Organization of Disabled Veterans of the IDF, called for a thorough investigation and increased psychological support for combat soldiers. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed condolences to the family and pledged continued support from his ministry, the police, and the Border Police. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
