Susan Sarandon Claims Hollywood Blacklisting Over Pro-Palestinian Stance

Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon stated at the Venice Film Festival that she continues to face professional repercussions in Hollywood due to her support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel. Sarandon, who was dropped by her agency in November 2023 after controversial remarks about Jewish people, claimed that film roles are still being "taken away" from her and that Hollywood agencies are warning creators against hiring her.

"I think the narrative has completely changed regarding the history of Palestine and the connections of Zionists with America and with our politics," Sarandon remarked during a press conference. She also suggested that the American public is now more aware of the extent of U.S. aid to Israel. Sarandon specifically accused pro-Israel factions within Hollywood, stating, "I've had films taken away from me recently, because there are agencies that tell people not to hire me." She added that there are still "positions held by Zionists who have not changed their attitude towards me" within the industry.

Sarandon contrasted her experience in the U.S. with her reception elsewhere, saying she feels more welcomed internationally and has "found my family, found my people, and I'm okay." Her comments at the festival were met with applause.

The controversy stems from remarks Sarandon made at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York in November 2023, shortly after the October 7th Hamas attacks. At the time, she said that Jewish people in the U.S. were "now getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country." Following these comments, her agency UTA severed ties with her. Sarandon later apologized, calling her statement a "terrible mistake" and clarifying she did not intend to downplay the historical persecution of Jewish people. She has continued to participate in pro-Palestinian protests and criticize Israel since then.

Sarandon attended the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of "The Echo Chamber," directed by Andrea Pallaoro, which is competing for the Golden Lion. She thanked Pallaoro for not heeding warnings against working with her.
