United Torah Judaism Factions Consider Replacing Veteran Lawmakers

Following recent leadership changes within the Degel HaTorah faction, its sister party, Agudat Yisrael, is reportedly considering similar moves to replace veteran lawmakers. These potential shake-ups are occurring against a backdrop of internal discussions about decision-making processes within the ultra-Orthodox political parties.

Within the Belz Hasidic community, a discussion is underway regarding the future of MK Israel Eichler, who has served intermittently since 2003. A potential successor being considered is Elyakim Stark, a prominent and energetic young figure within the community, currently serving as chairman of the community's workers' council and who managed its political operations in recent local elections. Stark is reportedly well-regarded by the Rebbe's son. The community is awaiting an update on the Rebbe's health, as he was hospitalized on Tuesday at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center.

In the Gur Hasidic community, significant shifts are also being discussed. This follows the removal of Bnei Brak Mayor Chanoch Zeibert from managing the community's negotiations, replaced by Yisrael Drenger, who also represents Gur in Agudat Yisrael's 'Committee of Eight.' Additionally, Moty Babchik, considered a key figure in Gur and the close aide to MK Yitzhak Goldknopf, is reportedly facing potential removal from his roles as movement secretary-general and aide.

For the Vizhnitz Hasidic community, MK Yaakov Tessler, who previously served as Deputy Minister of Culture, has not yet received approval from the Rebbe to continue his term. The community has begun evaluating new candidates, including activists Shiki Mandel and Yosef Shimon Shechter.

These potential changes come as Agudat Yisrael and Degel HaTorah are expected to finalize a joint electoral slate for upcoming elections. The current proposed distribution allocates spots 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 to Degel HaTorah, with Agudat Yisrael receiving the remaining positions.
