Top Rabbi Replaces Knesset Members in Degel HaTorah Party List

Rabbi Dov Lando, the spiritual leader of the Lithuanian branch of the ultra-Orthodox community, has decided to replace Knesset members Moshe Gafni and Uri Makleb with new representatives on the "Degel HaTorah" party list. According to an official statement from the rabbi's office, Lando sent personal letters to Gafni and Makleb, thanking them for their years of service, particularly their efforts to secure the status of yeshiva students. However, Lando cited the need for "renewal among Knesset members" as the reason for their replacement.

Gafni has been offered to continue his work as chairman of the national "Degel HaTorah" movement. This decision follows earlier reports from August 10th, which indicated that "Degel HaTorah" spiritual leaders were considering replacing Gafni and Makleb. A primary criticism leveled against them was their alleged failure over the past four years to pass legislation regulating the status of yeshiva students.

Knesset member Yaakov Asher is reportedly the leading candidate to take the top spot on the "Degel HaTorah" list, and potentially the joint "Yahadut HaTorah" list, for the upcoming elections. Gafni was first elected to the Knesset in 1988 and has served almost continuously since then, while Makleb has been a Member of Knesset since 2008.
