Top Rabbi Asks Two Knesset Members to Step Down for "Refresh"
Rabbi Dov Landau, a leading figure in the Lithuanian Haredi public, has requested that Knesset members Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev resign from their positions in the Knesset. In personal letters, Rabbi Landau thanked the two lawmakers for their service, specifically mentioning their "struggle for the status of yeshiva students."
The resignations are reportedly part of a plan for "refreshment among Knesset members," which will allow new representatives to enter the Knesset. Rabbi Landau also asked Gafni to continue serving as the chairman of the national movement of Degel HaTorah.
Gafni and Maklev are both senior members of the United Torah Judaism party, which represents a significant portion of the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community in Israel. Their departure from the Knesset, if it occurs, could signal a shift in the party's representation.
