Israeli-Russian Journalist Arrested at Ben Gurion Airport on Espionage Charges

New details have emerged regarding the arrest of a Russian-Israeli journalist, identified as Artem Kirpichenok, 51, upon his arrival at Ben Gurion Airport on a flight from Armenia last month. Kirpichenok, a well-known journalist and historian in Russia, previously lived in Israel for about 15 years, served in the IDF, and studied at the Hebrew University. However, for the past two decades, he has resided in Russia, where he became a vocal critic of Israeli policy.

The primary suspicion against Kirpichenok is that he was operating on behalf of foreign intelligence agencies, carrying out influence operations and missions for them. Sources close to him suggest his contact was with a Russian entity. His arrival in Israel was reportedly prompted by an invitation to an alternative international conference, but investigations revealed no such event was planned, raising suspicions that the invitation was a deliberate "lure" to bring him to Israel for his arrest.

Kirpichenok was held in isolation at a Shin Bet facility for approximately 20 days, during which he was denied access to his lawyer. After finally meeting with legal counsel, he claimed that a confession he made during interrogation, which implicated himself, was obtained under severe duress. His lawyer is now seeking to have this confession invalidated.

Despite the defense's claims, the prosecution has approved the indictment against Kirpichenok and requested his detention until the legal proceedings conclude. The indictment is scheduled to be read tomorrow.
