Russian-Israeli Author Charged with Foreign Agent Activity

Israeli authorities have charged a Russian-Israeli citizen, identified by Russian media as anti-Zionist historian and writer Artyom Kurchinov, with security offenses. Kurchinov was arrested at Ben Gurion Airport on August 2nd after investigations revealed he received directives from foreign intelligence elements and engaged in activities aimed at exerting foreign influence against Israel. The Central District Prosecutor's Office filed the indictment and requested his detention until the legal proceedings conclude.

Much of the case remains under a gag order, and authorities have not disclosed the identity of the foreign intelligence service involved or the specific nature of the alleged activities. Reports indicate Kurchinov was denied access to his lawyer for the first 20 days of his detention due to the severity of the accusations. His supporters claim he was invited to an international academic conference and planned to leave Israel shortly after his arrival.

Kurchinov's family contacted officials regarding the conference, but the municipality was unaware of any such event. The family also stated that unofficial information suggests suspicions of espionage and contact with a foreign intelligence agent, though they claimed the contact was not with Iran or Lebanon. Kurchinov had previously traveled to Iran twice, in 2018 and 2022, despite an Israeli ban on travel to the country.

His lawyer, Ina Lidensky-Katz, asserted that her client never possessed classified materials or information related to Israeli security, stating, "State security was not harmed, nor could it have been." She added that he was never asked to transfer information concerning Israel. The defense has requested the exclusion of Kurchinov's statements made under interrogation, alleging they were made under duress, and a request for house arrest was denied.

The family also alleged Kurchinov was held in solitary confinement and threatened with confiscation of his apartment and deportation to Ukraine. These claims have not been independently verified, and the Shin Bet declined to comment. The Russian Embassy is seeking information on his detention, and a Russian presidential human rights council has asked a UN group to intervene.

Born in Leningrad, Kurchinov moved to Israel as a teenager, served in the IDF, and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He returned to Russia around 2005 but retained his Israeli citizenship and owns an apartment in Ashkelon. He has published works critical of the Israeli government, including a book describing Israel as the "last bastion of Western colonialism" and rejecting its status as a Jewish state. Haaretz has previously associated him with a small Russian communist faction supporting the invasion of Ukraine.
