Russian-Israeli Journalist Arrested in Israel Identified as Spy Suspect

Russian-Israeli journalist and historian Artyom Kirpichenok, arrested in Israel about a month ago, is reportedly the Israeli citizen indicted on security offenses for operating on behalf of foreign intelligence services. Russian media outlets, including Meduza, have published reports identifying Kirpichenok as the suspect, though official confirmation from Israel is pending due to a gag order on most details of the case. Kirpichenok's representatives told Meduza that he is being investigated for espionage and contact with a foreign intelligence agent. His lawyer stated that prior to the indictment, the exact charges were unclear.

Israeli authorities confirmed on Friday that an Israeli citizen was indicted for being "activated by foreign intelligence entities" and involved in foreign influence operations against Israel. The details align with the Russian reports, but the gag order prevents Israeli officials from officially naming Kirpichenok as the defendant. Kirpichenok, who holds both Russian and Israeli citizenship and has been living in Russia recently, arrived in Israel in early August and was detained shortly after landing at Ben Gurion Airport.

Kirpichenok is known for his work as a journalist and historian focusing on Israel and the Middle East, publishing in various Russian media outlets. His reporting included two visits to Iran in 2018 and 2022, though these trips have not been linked to the current investigation.
