Israelis Barred From Northern Ireland Triathlon Over Palestinian Suffering

Four Israeli athletes were barred from competing in the European Triathlon Cup in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, on Saturday, September 5, with organizers citing "Palestinian suffering" as the reason. The Northwest Triathlon Club (NWTC), the event's organizer, officially announced the decision. The NWTC stated they became aware of the Israeli athletes' participation only after a preliminary list was published on the World Triathlon Federation website. The club issued a strong objection, declaring, "To avoid any misunderstanding, there will be no Israeli representation at events in our country." They clarified their stance was not against any religion or ethnicity but against the representation of the State of Israel, aiming to "prevent the presentation of a picture of normality on the world sports stage while Palestinians continue to suffer." DUP Member of the Parliament for Northern Ireland, Julie Middleton, condemned the decision as "disgusting," stating that a sporting event meant to showcase hospitality and openness was instead associated with barring athletes solely based on their nationality. Ireland, including Northern Ireland, generally holds a negative view of Israel and frequently boycotts events involving Israeli participation.
