Four Israeli Athletes Barred From Northern Ireland Triathlon Event

Four Israeli triathletes were barred from competing in a European Cup event in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, on Saturday, following objections from the local organizing club. The North West Triathlon Club (NWTC) stated they discovered the Israelis on the provisional participant list and immediately informed Triathlon Ireland and Europe Triathlon of their strong opposition.

The NWTC declared that athletes representing Israel would not participate in the City of Derry Triathlon, emphasizing that no Israeli representatives would be at the starting line. The club asserted its decision was not based on the athletes' religion or origin, but on its opposition to Israel's representation in international competitions. They cited a desire to avoid presenting a "normality on the international sports scene while Palestinians continue to suffer." Security concerns for athletes, the public, and volunteers were also mentioned.

Triathlon Ireland confirmed that no Israeli athletes were on the final participant list, noting that Europe Triathlon, under World Triathlon rules, is responsible for competitor selection and validation. The decision drew sharp criticism, with local politician Julie Middleton calling it a "terrible image" for Londonderry. She argued that an event meant to showcase the city's "hospitality and openness" was instead associated with "excluding athletes because they are Israeli."

Northern Ireland police were aware of potential protests surrounding the competition, which was expected to draw up to 200 international athletes.
