UK Triathlon Club Bars Israeli Athletes Citing 'Representation of Israel'

Four Israeli athletes were denied participation in the European Triathlon Cup scheduled for Saturday in Northern Ireland. The North West Triathlon Club (NWTC), the organizing body, announced its "unequivocal opposition" to the Israelis competing, stating that athletes representing Israel would not be allowed to start or take part in their event.

The NWTC clarified that their stance was not directed at individuals based on religion or ethnicity, but rather concerned "the representation of the State of Israel in international sport" and the attempt to project an image of normalcy in international sports while "Palestinians continue to suffer." The club also emphasized that the "safety of all athletes, volunteers, spectators, and the public" was their top priority throughout the organization of the 2026 European Triathlon Cup.

The Derry Against War coalition hailed the decision as a "huge victory for common sense." However, the Israeli Embassy in the UK expressed deep concern, calling the decision "deeply troubling" and stating that "Sport should bring people together, not become a vehicle for discrimination and division."

The embassy questioned the club's ability to host future events if it cannot ensure the safety of all participants and attendees, asserting that the NWTC "must uphold the principles of equality, fairness, and inclusion" and that Israeli athletes should have the same right to compete as those of any other nationality.
