Israelis Barred From Northern Ireland Triathlon Amid Pro-Palestinian Concerns

Four Israeli athletes were barred from participating in the Europe Triathlon Cup in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, this past weekend. The North West Triathlon Club (NWTC), the organizing body, announced the decision on Thursday, stating they only became aware of the Israelis' participation after the provisional list was published by the World Triathlon Federation. The NWTC expressed strong opposition to their presence, citing the ongoing suffering of Palestinians. "To avoid any misunderstanding - there will be no Israeli representation competing in the event," the club stated on social media. The club emphasized that their stance is not against individuals based on religion or ethnicity, but against the "representation of the State of Israel in international sports and the attempt to present a picture of normalcy on the world sports stage, while Palestinians continue to suffer."

Julie Middleton, a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), condemned the decision, calling it a "very sad picture for Londonderry." She added that an international sports event, meant to showcase the city's hospitality, was marred by the exclusion of athletes simply because they are Israeli.

Authorities were reportedly made aware of the potential for protests against the Israeli athletes through social media. This incident follows other protests against upcoming matches between the Irish and Israeli national football teams in the Nations League. The home game for the Israeli team, scheduled for October 4, will be held in Serbia behind closed doors, and their away game against Northern Ireland on September 27 will take place in Hungary.
