Israeli Lawmaker Threatens to Leave Likud Party Over List Placement

Knesset Member Tally Gotlib has indicated she is prepared to leave Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party if offered a suitable position and a ministerial post by another political faction. Gotlib stated on social media platform X that she would seriously consider such an offer if it respected her "electoral strength" and "obvious ability to become a minister in an important position," though she clarified no such offer has been made.

The lawmaker's strong statement stems from her placement on Likud's electoral list. Despite securing 12th place in the party's primaries, reserved spots pushed her down to the 20th position, which she considers a "passable" but unsatisfactory ranking. Gotlib believes she has been politically sidelined, alleging that Netanyahu, influenced by his advisors, intentionally removed her from leading positions and excluded her from the party's election campaign.

Gotlib, who identifies as a staunch critic of the Supreme Court and a proponent of strengthening government authority, had reportedly hoped for the Justice Minister role or the chairmanship of the Knesset's legislative committee. She acknowledged Netanyahu's prerogative as prime minister to make these decisions but expressed her unwillingness to be a "pawn."

Senior Likud officials have dismissed Gotlib's claims as "far-fetched and false," suggesting her dissatisfaction arises from an unwillingness to accept the primary results. The party also reportedly stated that Gotlib herself had demanded the 12th spot on the list.

While not seen as a major party split, Gotlib's public challenge to the leadership and her openness to exploring other political avenues could signal trouble for Likud as elections approach. Her departure would represent a significant loss for the party's right wing.
