US Strikes Iran's Revolutionary Guard After Attacks

The United States carried out a series of strikes across southern Iran on Tuesday evening, escalating tensions with Tehran. The action followed President Donald Trump's vow to deliver a "strong blow" to Iran in retaliation for recent Iranian attacks targeting U.S. bases in the region.

Iranian reports indicated explosions were heard in the coastal city of Bandar Abbas, on Qeshm Island within the Strait of Hormuz, and in Chabahar in southeastern Iran on the Gulf of Oman. Further reports of explosions emerged later from Jask, Sirik, and Minab. The U.S. Central Command confirmed its forces conducted the strikes, stating they targeted various sites belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The command explained the attacks were in response to recent IRGC attempts to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. forces deployed in the area.

The escalation occurred a day after Trump pledged a forceful response to an Iranian missile and drone attack that hit U.S. bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates on Sunday night. That Iranian attack followed a U.S. strike on missile launch sites on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first direct exchange of fire between the two sides in about a month. Washington stated the Larak Island strike aimed to thwart an Iranian attempt to plant naval mines in the strait, which would have disrupted oil tanker traffic.

Amid the rising tensions, the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem warned American citizens in the Middle East about the volatile security situation, advising caution due to potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions. The embassy also noted that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, had been targeted, warning of further potential attacks on U.S. interests, companies, and citizens abroad.

The current escalation occurs while the Trump administration continues its economic pressure strategy against Iran, aiming for concessions. However, President Trump has emphasized that the confrontation is limited and he does not seek a full-scale war. The possibility of wider conflict remains, particularly given Iran's repeated threats to prevent the indefinite continuation of sanctions against it. Iran is also facing a deepening economic crisis, exacerbated by recent events, with a sharp decline in its currency and rising inflation.
