US Launches Strikes in Iran Amid Escalating Tensions

The United States launched a wave of strikes against Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman region on Tuesday, amid renewed escalation between Washington and Tehran. Initial reports from Iran indicated explosions in Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, and Qeshm Island, followed by further reports of explosions in Jask, Sirik, Minab, and the ports of Konarak and Chabahar in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

A senior U.S. official confirmed to Axios that the strikes were carried out by the United States and targeted Iranian objectives in the Strait of Hormuz area. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. military's Central Command issued an official statement confirming the operation's commencement. According to the statement, U.S. forces began attacking Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps targets at 12:00 PM Eastern Time.

CENTCOM stated that the strikes were a response to recent attempts by the Revolutionary Guard to harm commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. soldiers stationed in the region. This action follows a promise by U.S. President Donald Trump to respond forcefully to Iran after Tehran launched missiles and drones at U.S. bases in Jordan and the UAE the previous night. That Iranian attack was itself a response to a U.S. strike on missile launchers on Iran's Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

These exchanges marked the first direct U.S.-Iran hostilities in about a month, and the new wave of strikes has heightened concerns about further escalation. In light of these developments, the U.S. Embassy in Israel issued a warning to American citizens in the region, citing the complex security situation and the possibility of unpredictable escalation due to Middle East tensions. The embassy advised increased vigilance and preparedness for potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.

Similar advisories were also sent to U.S. citizens in Jordan, Oman, Bahrain, and Qatar.
