Trump Escalates Rhetoric on Iran, Citing Attacks and Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump stated that the United States has "gone into Iran and we are hitting them hard," amid escalating tensions. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump described Iran as a "failed state" and questioned the legitimacy of its leadership, suggesting they "don't even know who their leader is."

Vice President J.D. Vance elaborated on the context of recent U.S. actions, explaining that they were a response to an Iranian intention to plant mines in the Strait of Hormuz to disrupt maritime traffic. Vance noted that the U.S. is focused on ensuring freedom of navigation in the vital waterway, adding that Iran sometimes fires on its allies to impede the flow of oil and gas.

The current escalation follows an Iranian attack on U.S. forces in Jordan. According to President Trump, U.S. air defense systems intercepted most of the ballistic missiles launched at American bases, with one missile identified as unlikely to hit a significant target. This Iranian strike was reportedly a retaliation for an earlier U.S. military operation that targeted Revolutionary Guard launchers intended for mine-laying in the international shipping lane.

An official U.S. source confirmed that the Iranian missile salvo did not result in significant damage. Meanwhile, Jordan's military reported that its air defense systems intercepted eight missiles that crossed its airspace during the attack. Iranian Foreign Minister attempted to sow discord between Israel and the United States by accusing Prime Minister Netanyahu of duplicity towards the U.S. administration.
