Trump Orders Strikes on Iranian Targets Near Strait of Hormuz

U.S. forces are currently striking Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday. The strikes are a direct response to recent "serious security incidents" perpetrated by Iran, including an attempt to lay naval mines in the strait and the firing of eight missiles toward a U.S. military base in Jordan, all of which were successfully intercepted. Trump warned Tehran that any retaliatory actions would be met with a "much higher level of force," adding that a larger, more devastating attack is being held in reserve that would leave "very little" of the Islamic Republic.

Iran quickly responded, with the Revolutionary Guards spokesperson stating the U.S. would "regret" its new attacks. A senior Iranian official vowed a response "several times stronger" than the American strikes. Earlier, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces had officially begun striking strategic Revolutionary Guards targets inside Iran, with reports of intense explosions in Bandar Abbas.

When asked if the strikes signaled a limited military action or full-scale war, Trump described Iran as a "failed state" but indicated further action was possible, stating, "We'll see what happens." He emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is in "very good condition" with significant maritime traffic. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance clarified that the U.S. operations aim to ensure freedom of navigation and commerce in the strait, reiterating that the recent strikes were in response to Iran's mine-laying intentions.

The current escalation began after Iran attacked U.S. forces in Jordan. According to Trump, U.S. air defense systems intercepted most of the ballistic missiles, with one missile identified as non-threatening. The Iranian attack was reportedly in retaliation for an earlier U.S. military operation targeting Revolutionary Guards launchers intended for mine-laying in international shipping lanes. Jordan's air defense systems intercepted eight missiles that crossed its airspace during the Iranian attack. Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister accused Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu of duplicity towards the U.S. administration.
