Escape attempt thwarted at Hashmonaim crossing after stolen car rams police
Police said a stolen car was reported heading toward the Hashmonaim crossing on Route 446 shortly before the incident. Officers prepared to stop it at the checkpoint.
When the suspect saw the police, he tried to flee, broke through the police barrier, hit police vehicles and also attempted to run over officers at the scene. The officers guarding the checkpoint said they feared for their lives and opened fire at the car, bringing it to a stop.
Medics are treating the suspect, described as a Palestinian from Bethlehem, and police remain at the scene. The Hashmonaim crossing has been closed to vehicle traffic in both directions, and the circumstances are still under investigation.
