Israeli Authorities Brace for Severe Weather System with Heavy Rain and Flood Risks

Israeli emergency services and local municipalities are intensifying preparations ahead of an unusual severe weather system expected to hit the country over the weekend. The system, forecast to bring heavy rain in short bursts, thunderstorms, and strong winds reaching 40 to 50 km/h, is anticipated to peak during the night between Saturday and Sunday.

The Fire and Rescue Services Commissioner, Major General Eyal Caspi, has ordered all districts to elevate their readiness levels. Rescue units, including water rescue teams and the national rescue unit Lahav, will be deployed to high-risk areas. Emergency call centers (102) will also be reinforced to handle a potential surge in calls. The fire services have warned the public to avoid flowing water and riverbeds during outdoor activities, emphasizing that even shallow water can be dangerous. They also advised against using elevators or staying in underground levels during floods and cautioned against crossing flooded roads when water depth is uncertain.

Local authorities in Haifa and Kfar Saba have begun preventive measures. Haifa’s municipality is inspecting drainage systems, clearing debris, and reinforcing teams to manage flooding, mudslides, and fallen trees, especially in vulnerable areas. Mayor Yona Yahav described the heavy rain at the end of August as "a very unusual event," highlighting the city's complex topography and the critical need for early preparation and rapid response. Kfar Saba officials urged residents to clean gutters, secure loose objects, check electrical systems, and prepare emergency lighting and batteries.
