Unprecedented August Rainstorm Approaches Israel Bringing Early Winter Weather and Flood Risks

An extraordinary winter rain system is expected to hit Israel starting Saturday night, marking a rare weather event for August. This unusual storm is driven by a cold air mass entering the region, clashing with the typically hot ground and creating severe atmospheric instability. The first signs of the system will appear Saturday afternoon with localized cloud development in mountainous areas.

The main rain front will arrive late Saturday night and continue into Sunday afternoon, bringing thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and strong winds. Temperatures will drop slightly but remain relatively high, around 31 degrees Celsius in Tel Aviv and 28 in Jerusalem, with only brief cooling during cloud cover.

Rainfall will cover a broad area from northern Israel down to the Negev desert, but intensity will vary significantly. Most regions will see light rain between 1 and 5 millimeters, while coastal and northern areas, including the Western Galilee, Haifa Bay, and central coastal plain, could receive heavy downpours of 20 to 40 millimeters, with localized spots possibly reaching 60 millimeters in a short time.

Authorities warn that urban drainage systems are not prepared for winter rains this early in the season, raising concerns about urban flooding and flash floods. The Western Galilee Drainage Authority strictly prohibits entering riverbeds, hiking trails near water sources, and flood-prone open areas. Fire and rescue services are increasing water rescue units and emergency call centers in anticipation of traffic and safety challenges. The public is urged to avoid river crossings and flooded roads for their safety.
