Woman Bitten by Venomous Snake in Rishon Lezion Hospitalized in Serious Condition

The story · English

A 48-year-old woman was bitten by a venomous snake while working on Wednesday morning in Rishon Lezion, Israel. Emergency medical teams from Magen David Adom (MDA) responded promptly after receiving a call at 07:51 from the Ayalon district. Paramedics found the woman conscious but suffering from snakebite symptoms on her lower limbs. She was given initial treatment including medication and was transported in stable but serious condition to Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh Hospital).

MDA paramedic Tehila Cohen described the scene, noting the woman was sitting and aware when they arrived. The snake involved was identified as a vipera palaestinae, a venomous species common throughout Israel, particularly active during spring and summer months when temperatures rise.

Medical experts warn against cutting the bite site, sucking out venom, or applying tourniquets. They advise against chasing or capturing the snake, though photographing it can help with identification and treatment. Immediate medical attention is critical, with symptoms to watch for including bite marks, swelling, sharp pain, blisters, red streaks, numbness, nausea, weakness, rapid pulse, confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness.

In recent years, several serious snakebite cases have been reported in Israel, including critical incidents involving the highly venomous Sinai viper. Authorities urge caution when working outdoors, recommending closed shoes and vigilance to prevent bites and ensure swift medical care if bitten.
