IDF Supports Elor Azaria's Request to Shorten Criminal Record Period

Elor Azaria has submitted a request to shorten the duration of his criminal record, the President's Residence confirmed on Tuesday. The request was forwarded to the defense establishment for opinions, including from the Defense Minister and the IDF. So far, only Defense Minister Israel Katz's opinion has been received, recommending approval, while the IDF Chief of Staff, military prosecution, and head of IDF manpower have yet to submit their views. President Isaac Herzog will consider the request carefully once all opinions are in.

Earlier, Defense Minister Katz formally asked President Herzog to shorten Azaria's criminal record period, noting that over ten years have passed since the incident and that Azaria served his full prison sentence by 2018. Katz emphasized that the request does not seek to erase the conviction itself but to reduce the record period now that the statutory limitation has expired. Katz highlighted Azaria's distinguished service as a combat medic in the Kfir Brigade, the operational context of the incident, and the personal and public price Azaria has paid. He also referenced the October 7 terror attacks and subsequent prisoner releases, arguing that continuing to hinder Azaria's reintegration is unjust.

Katz stressed that allowing Azaria to rehabilitate and reintegrate sends a positive message to soldiers serving in dangerous roles. He clarified that granting the request does not negate the past but reflects principles of rehabilitation and recognition that Azaria has borne the consequences of his actions for many years. The final decision awaits the remaining defense establishment opinions before President Herzog makes a ruling.
