Defense Minister Katz Requests Presidential Pardon for Elor Azaria After a Decade

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has formally requested President Isaac Herzog to grant a pardon to Elor Azaria by shortening the period for erasing his criminal record. Katz emphasized in his letter that more than ten years have passed since the incident, and Azaria has already served his full prison sentence handed down in 2018. The request does not seek to overturn the conviction but aims to reduce the time before Azaria’s criminal record can be cleared, as the statutory expiration period has already elapsed.

Katz highlighted Azaria’s service as a combat medic in the Kfir Brigade and the operational context of the incident. He also noted the personal, familial, and public price Azaria has paid over the years, as well as his efforts to rehabilitate, start a family, and reintegrate into the workforce. The defense minister referenced the October 7 terrorist attacks and their aftermath, which underscored the security threats faced by IDF soldiers. Katz further pointed out that hundreds of terrorists have been released in recent years as part of prisoner exchange deals, making it difficult to justify ongoing barriers to Azaria’s full societal reintegration.

Katz stressed that this is not about erasing the offense but about recognizing the principle of rehabilitation after a decade. He argued that it is unreasonable for a decorated soldier convicted of an offense committed during operational service to continue paying a heavy price after so many years. Katz warned that this sends a negative message to Israeli youth serving in combat and dangerous roles and called for allowing Azaria to rebuild his life and move forward.
