Benny Gantz and Gilad Erdan Discuss Party Merger Ahead of Elections

Benny Gantz, leader of the Blue and White party, and Gilad Erdan, head of the Unity party, met on Wednesday to discuss a potential merger ahead of the upcoming elections. Both leaders assume that neither party will surpass the electoral threshold independently, making a joint list a strategic move. However, neither is willing to relinquish leadership. Gantz is also negotiating to include former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked in the alliance. Despite these talks, insiders warn that even a merged list might struggle to pass the threshold.

Erdan's advantage in the talks lies in Blue and White's substantial funding capacity, while Gantz's party has been declining in polls, with internal pressure mounting on him to act. The Unity party confirmed the meeting was positive and announced further discussions are planned soon.

Meanwhile, Blue and White faces internal turmoil. Just a day before the meeting, party sources warned that Gantz is leading the party toward ruin. Member of Knesset Yael Ron Ben-Moshe resigned, accusing Gantz of harming the change camp and refusing to participate in the new political framework he is trying to establish. She acknowledged the importance of unity efforts but criticized the current approach as potentially futile or even damaging.
