Hamas Uses Gaza Kite Launches to Test Israeli Response and Erode Deterrence

Yaron Buskila, CEO of the Security Movement and retired lieutenant colonel, warned in a Channel 14 interview on August 26 that the recent kite launches from Gaza are not isolated incidents but part of a deliberate Hamas strategy. He explained that Hamas is gradually testing Israel's response limits to weaken its deterrence over time. Buskila cautioned that this creeping erosion of Israeli defenses and deterrence is dangerous, comparing it to the lead-up to the October 7 attacks, when early warnings were insufficiently heeded.

Buskila emphasized that even when Hamas is not capable of launching large-scale attacks, it still engages in incremental actions like kite launches to wear down Israeli security mechanisms. Earlier on the same day, defense correspondent Hillel Biton Rozen criticized Israel’s response, noting that attacking an empty Hamas building with a weapons cache years after the October 7 massacre is an inadequate reaction to the kite threat.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning to Hamas against continuing to send kites and balloons from Gaza into southern Israeli communities, declaring a policy of zero tolerance and zero accommodation toward these provocations. The ongoing kite launches have raised concerns among Israeli officials about a Hezbollah-style model of gradual escalation. The situation remains tense as Israel seeks to prevent further erosion of its security along the Gaza border.
