Palestinian Security Forces Detain Armed Israeli Reservist in West Bank's Area C

An unusual incident occurred overnight between Sunday and Monday in the Benjamin region of the West Bank, where Palestinian security forces detained an armed Israeli reservist on leave. The event took place on a side road near Beitunia, close to Ramallah, within Area C. According to the Benjamin Regional Council, this represents a serious overreach of authority by the Palestinian Authority's security apparatus. Video footage from the scene shows Palestinian security personnel standing beside the settler's vehicle with its door open, one of them stating, "We are the Palestinian police." The reservist's weapon was reportedly confiscated during the incident.

The Civil Administration linked this case to two other incidents involving Israelis entering Palestinian areas near Jericho and Bethlehem, requiring extraction. However, the Civil Administration later clarified that the reservist did not enter Area A but remained near it in Area C, apologizing for the initial misinformation. Preliminary investigations suggest that Palestinian security forces, stationed nearby in Area A, noticed a gathering of Palestinians around the reservist and feared for his immediate safety. They approached his location and coordinated with Israeli security forces to transfer custody of the settler.

The incident remains under investigation, with Israeli security officials examining the circumstances of the Palestinian forces' entry into Area C and their conduct. The Benjamin Regional Council sharply criticized the Civil Administration's statement, accusing it of blaming the Israeli resident for traveling in a dangerous area instead of condemning the unauthorized actions of Palestinian police in Area C. Israel Gantz, head of the Benjamin Regional Council and chairman of the Yesha Council, condemned the Palestinian Authority's actions as violations of the Oslo Accords and called for their cancellation, advocating for free movement and settlement expansion in Benjamin, Judea, and Samaria. He also urged immediate action to open a secure route between Gush Dolav-Talmonim and Highway 443.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions over jurisdiction and enforcement authority in the West Bank, where previous clashes have occurred over Palestinian police activity in or near Area C roads. Settler leaders have previously demanded that the Israeli military halt such Palestinian enforcement actions and clarify jurisdictional boundaries.
