Israel Faces Rare August Heavy Rains Amid Super El Niño Weather Pattern

Following a record-breaking heatwave in Europe, including London’s hottest day of the year at 39 degrees Celsius, Israel is expected to experience unusual rainfall this weekend. After several days of intense heat, temperatures in Israel dropped by two to three degrees on Thursday compared to Tuesday, with a slight further decrease forecast for Friday. Light rain or drizzle may occur in northern and coastal plains areas in the morning, with localized showers expected in northern highlands and eastern regions by afternoon.

Meteorological experts attribute these rare August rains, particularly heavy in eastern Israel’s Golan Heights, Jordan Valley, Judean Desert, and Dead Sea areas, to the emerging effects of a "Super El Niño" phenomenon. Dr. Amir Gevati, head of the Israeli Meteorological Service, explained that cooler air and mid-atmosphere moisture arriving from Greece will trigger these showers, with models predicting strong localized downpours and potential flash floods in eastern riverbeds.

Rainfall in August is uncommon in Israel, especially significant amounts exceeding 5 to 10 millimeters, which occur only once or twice every decade. The last notable event was in August 2022 in the Hula and Golan regions. However, heavy rains in southern areas like Jerusalem and the Dead Sea are extremely rare or unprecedented. Dr. Gevati also noted that the upcoming autumn season is expected to be wetter than usual, consistent with altered weather patterns during El Niño years.

Authorities have issued multiple safety warnings ahead of the rains. The Nature and Parks Authority prohibits entering riverbeds during flow due to flood risks and warns against approaching riverbanks during flash floods. Police will deploy officers in vulnerable areas and advise the public to avoid non-essential travel, especially near flood-prone zones. Travelers are urged to seek updated information before venturing outdoors and to strictly follow safety instructions to prevent life-threatening incidents.

Temperature forecasts for Friday include highs of 30 degrees in Jerusalem, 32 in Tel Aviv, and up to 41 in Eilat, with cooler conditions expected over the weekend. The public is cautioned to stay away from flooded roads and river channels and to observe all official guidance during this unusual weather event.
