Southern Israel Faces Flood Risks as Localized August Rainfall Expected

After a hot and dry week, temperatures in Israel are set to return to seasonal norms starting Friday, with a chance of localized rain mainly in eastern regions over the weekend. While most of the country will remain dry, the Fire and Rescue Services have issued warnings about potential flash floods in the Dead Sea streams, Judean Desert, and northern Arava areas. Emergency teams in these regions are on high alert with rescue crews and specialized equipment prepared for flood response.

Authorities strongly advise the public to avoid entering riverbeds on foot or by vehicle during water flow due to life-threatening risks, and to stay away from riverbanks because of possible collapses. Travelers are urged to check for road closures and follow traffic instructions before heading out.

The rain is expected primarily on Saturday, possibly continuing into Sunday and Monday, with the highest likelihood in the Golan Heights, Samaria, Jerusalem Mountains, and the Negev Highlands. Rainfall will be very localized and sporadic, ranging from light drizzles to heavier showers, with some areas experiencing cloud cover without rain. Most Israelis will not experience any precipitation, and daytime temperatures will remain warm, typical for August.

Although significant summer rain is uncommon, it is not unprecedented in Israel. Light rain events occur several times each summer, and more substantial localized rain happens every few years. Past August rain incidents include notable storms in 2006, 2008, 2020, 2022, and 2025. Officials will assess the event's severity and flood impact only after the weather system passes, but currently, there is no indication that this upcoming weather pattern is unusual or extreme.
