Dr. Amir Givati, head of the Israeli Meteorological Service, warned on Thursday that Saturday will bring rain, potentially heavy enough to cause flash floods, particularly in eastern regions such as the Dead Sea, the Golan Heights, and the Judean Desert. This weather event is highly atypical for August, a month usually characterized by dry, hot conditions.

While the coastal plain will see relief from the heat and humidity, the eastern desert areas may face significant rainfall, with some areas receiving several millimeters of rain. The Nature and Parks Authority has prohibited entry into flowing riverbeds until water levels recede, emphasizing the danger of approaching floodwaters. Fire and Rescue Services have echoed these warnings, urging the public to follow security instructions and stay updated on road closures and safety measures. The Arava Rescue Unit specifically highlighted the risk of heavy localized rain and flash floods in the Arava region and southern Dead Sea area on Saturday afternoon.

Looking ahead, while some rain may continue into Sunday in eastern Israel, the latter half of August is expected to return to typical summer weather, though not as hot as the recent heatwave. Meteorologists anticipate an active autumn with above-average rainfall, consistent with patterns seen during El Niño years. Dr. Givati noted that the current unusual weather is part of broader global climate disruptions linked to this phenomenon.
