Flight Delays Nearly Double at Tel Aviv Airport Amid Peak August Travel Surge

During the peak travel season in August, Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport is experiencing significant flight delays and cancellations. Analysis of 3,598 flights between August 5 and 11 shows only 30.1% departed on time, with an average delay of 74.3 minutes, nearly doubling the 40-minute average delay recorded two weeks earlier. Additionally, 136 flights were canceled, a 64% increase from the 83 cancellations out of 3,499 flights in late July. About 950 flights departed at least an hour late, including 592 delayed between one and two hours and 358 delayed over two hours.

Among airlines, Wizz Air had the longest average departure delay at 118 minutes, followed by Blue Bird at 107 minutes and TUS Airways at 101 minutes. Fly Dubai was the most punctual, with 64.7% of flights departing on schedule. Destination also impacted delays, with only 9.1% of flights to Barcelona leaving on time. Arrival delays were also severe, with TUS Airways flights delayed on average by 163 minutes, Blue Bird by 138 minutes, and Arkia by 114 minutes.

The delays are largely attributed to heavy air traffic congestion over Greece, where air traffic authorities have limited the number of flights passing through their airspace en route to Europe. The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) warned travelers to check flight statuses before arriving at the airport. The IAA also noted that American refueling aircraft remain stationed at Ben Gurion due to recent security events, contributing to airport congestion.

The IAA emphasized that summer months are the busiest for international air travel, with about 100,000 passengers and 600 aircraft movements daily at Ben Gurion. They stressed that many delays stem from factors beyond their control, such as European airspace restrictions. Passengers are advised to arrive three hours before flights, consistent with guidelines in place since October 2023. Ilan Shalev, marketing director of the vacation airline group operating Blue Bird and TUS Airways, confirmed that the main cause of delays is the unusual congestion in Greek airspace, especially on routes to and from the Greek islands. Despite challenges, both airlines maintain their full flight schedules, operating about 38 flights daily from Ben Gurion.

The situation highlights ongoing operational challenges at Ben Gurion amid peak summer travel and regional airspace restrictions, with no immediate improvement expected in the coming weeks.
