New Check-In Time Limits at Ben Gurion Airport Cause Passenger Delays and Confusion

Ben Gurion Airport is facing increased passenger congestion this summer due to high travel volumes, disruptions in Europe, and the presence of American refueling crews. Recently, the Israel Airports Authority (IAA) implemented a new directive limiting checked baggage acceptance to three hours before flight departure, down from the previous four-hour window. This change, effective from August 3, aims to ease baggage handling pressures caused by staff shortages and operational overload in the baggage department.

While foreign airlines typically open check-in counters three hours before flights, Israeli carriers, which hold over 60% of the market share at Ben Gurion, had been allowing baggage drop-off four hours prior. The new rule has disrupted their operations, causing delays and even lost luggage incidents in the initial days. Israeli airlines attempted to maintain early check-in by assigning staff to early baggage, but this strained resources and led them to reduce check-in hours to align with the three-hour standard.

The IAA emphasizes that early counter openings were against regulations dating back to November 2025 and insists that three hours is the international norm. They also reject claims of staff shortages, noting an increase in baggage handling personnel from 1,753 in July 2025 to 1,811 in July 2026. Passengers arriving early now cannot check in baggage sooner, limiting their time in the terminal and duty-free areas, which negatively affects the travel experience.

In addition to terminal congestion, parking shortages have worsened, with short-term lots frequently closing due to overcrowding and drivers preferring covered, nearby parking despite higher costs. Enforcement of parking rules is weak, allowing vehicles to remain beyond 24 hours without penalties. The IAA recommends using public transportation to alleviate parking and traffic issues at the airport during peak travel periods.
