On Tuesday evening, Ben Gurion Airport experienced significant passenger congestion and delays across its terminal. Travelers reported long queues at check-in counters and baggage drop-off points, with waiting times exceeding two hours in some cases. The heavy crowding also caused prolonged flight departures, with some flights delayed by up to two hours.

Sources familiar with the situation attributed the bottlenecks primarily to a shortage of ground service staff struggling to manage the increased passenger volume during peak hours. One passenger described the scene as "the biggest chaos I've seen," noting the presence of large groups of young travelers participating in the Taglit-Birthright program and flights scheduled just minutes apart, which intensified the crowding.

Delays extended beyond check-in, as passengers boarding a flight to Crete reported waiting nearly an hour on the plane before takeoff due to last-minute baggage loading. Another flight to Rhodes, originally scheduled for 2 p.m., was postponed until 7 p.m., further illustrating operational challenges.

These congestion issues come ahead of the peak summer travel season, with August expected to see over 2.8 million passengers passing through Ben Gurion, a 24% increase compared to last year. Despite preparations and recommendations for travelers to arrive three hours early and complete check-in online, the current delays highlight limitations in ground service capacity. Ground handling companies, not the airport authority itself, are responsible for passenger and baggage processing, complicating accountability for the delays.
