Flight Delays at Ben Gurion Airport Due to Greek Airspace Traffic Restrictions

The Israel Airports Authority announced on Wednesday that Greek aviation authorities are currently limiting the number of flights allowed to pass through Greek airspace, a key route for flights from Israel to Europe. This restriction is causing delays for some flights departing from Ben Gurion Airport in the coming hours. The limitations stem from unusually high air traffic congestion over Greece and are unrelated to security issues in Israel.

Passengers traveling through Ben Gurion Airport are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight schedules before arriving at the airport. The announcement comes during the peak summer travel season, when Ben Gurion is experiencing record passenger volumes. In July alone, the airport handled over 2.35 million passengers, a 36% increase compared to the same period last year. Greece remains the most popular destination for Israeli travelers this summer, with more than 426,000 passengers flying there in July.

Ben Gurion Airport has recently faced various operational challenges, including the temporary occupation of parking spaces by U.S. refueling aircraft. Now, it must also contend with external air traffic congestion affecting European airspace. The Israel Airports Authority emphasized that these restrictions are temporary and will provide updates as the situation evolves. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the airport according to airline recommendations and prepare for possible delays.
