Ben Gurion Airport Faces Hours-Long Delays Due to Traffic Congestion and Airspace Restrictions

Ben Gurion Airport is experiencing significant delays on Friday, with passengers reporting wait times of several hours. The Israel Airports Authority denied claims of staff shortages, attributing the delays to heavy air traffic and airspace restrictions over Europe, particularly Greece, as well as the presence of US refueling aircraft. Within a three-hour window, an unusually high accumulation of about 90 flights was recorded, creating operational bottlenecks that slowed aircraft handling, baggage unloading, and overall processing times.

The authority explained that the summer months typically see increased flight volumes, and the combination of airspace limitations and the refueling planes' activity has caused flights that are normally spaced out to cluster into narrow time frames. Approximately 90,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport today on incoming and outgoing flights. The Israel Airports Authority expressed regret over the inconvenience and urged travelers to be patient, emphasizing that all teams are working continuously and at full capacity to manage the congestion.

Concerns remain about further disruptions, with warnings that if an additional refueling aircraft arrives at Ben Gurion, flight cancellations may begin. This situation highlights ongoing challenges at the airport amid peak travel season and complex airspace conditions.
