Ben Gurion Airport Faces Record Flight Delays Amid Summer Peak and Operational Strains

Ben Gurion Airport is experiencing unprecedented flight delays, with 214 out of 293 scheduled departures today delayed by more than 15 minutes, according to the airport's congestion index. Over 70% of flights today did not depart on time. Over the past week, the average delay reached 65 minutes, marking the most significant delays recorded at the airport this year, including during wartime periods.

The Israel Airports Authority issued an unusual statement acknowledging the operational overload caused by partner airlines' aircraft presence, which creates a domino effect impacting flight schedules during the peak summer season. They expressed awareness of the inconvenience caused to passengers and offered sincere apologies.

Contributing factors include the recent decision by the Israeli cabinet to relocate ten US Air Force refueling planes from Ben Gurion to Israeli military bases, although 30 refueling aircraft remain at the civilian airport. Additionally, two technical failures in European air traffic control systems, one in Greece and another within Eurocontrol, have compounded the situation. These issues, combined with the usual summer peak traffic of over 90,000 daily passengers, have created what the authority described as a "perfect storm" of delays.

The airport continues to operate under heavy strain, with no immediate resolution in sight, as summer travel demand remains high and operational challenges persist.
