Israeli Police Tighten Speed Camera Enforcement to Curb Road Fatalities

The Israeli Police Traffic Department is set to implement stricter enforcement thresholds for speed cameras in the coming days, aiming to reduce road fatalities. This move is part of a broader effort to combat the high number of deadly traffic accidents, which have claimed 270 lives so far this year. The updated enforcement will focus on high-risk areas to better address the changing realities on the roads.

Police emphasized that the goal of the new measures is not to issue fines but to save lives, prevent accidents, and create deterrence to reduce injuries and deaths. Excessive speed remains a leading cause of fatal accidents, with even small speed increases significantly raising stopping distances and reaction times, thereby increasing the risk of deadly outcomes.

Comparing data from the same period last year, when 283 people died in road accidents, police noted a slight improvement with 270 fatalities this year. A senior police official told Maariv that while zero accidents and fatalities remain the ideal, the current trend indicates progress due to intensified enforcement efforts. The police commissioner has designated the fight against road accidents as a national project of utmost importance.
