Israeli Police Solve Yoav Gelbo'a Murder Through Detailed Forensic and Surveillance Analysis
Israeli police have solved the unusual murder case of Yoav Gelbo'a, whose charred body was found in a nearly unidentifiable state in Zikhron Ya'akov. Initially, investigators did not even know the victim's identity, but meticulous detective work by the Coastal District Unit (Yam'ar Hof) allowed them to reconstruct the crime timeline before identifying Gelbo'a.
A key breakthrough came from analyzing traffic camera footage along the coastal highway, where a Mazda 5 vehicle unusually lingered for over a minute and a half between cameras. This vehicle was traced to Ruslan Abramov, which led investigators to uncover a second car, a Volkswagen Polo used by Gelbo'a's brother-in-law, Emil Avshaev. The Polo was found abandoned at a construction site near Hadera, containing blood stains and an old dashcam that recorded the entire murder sequence.
The dashcam footage showed Avshaev picking up Gelbo'a, spending hours together without suspicion, then driving to the coastal road where Avshaev stabbed Gelbo'a at least 59 times, including wounds to vital organs. A Russian-speaking informant planted by police confirmed Avshaev's violent attack and injury during the stabbing. According to the informant, Avshaev killed Gelbo'a because he "knew too much" about him.
After the murder, Avshaev reportedly disposed of evidence by burning the body with gasoline, washing himself, changing clothes, and coordinating with Abramov to hide the murder weapon and the Polo car. Security footage captured Avshaev returning home with bloodstains and a wounded finger, and later seen with Abramov filling gasoline and setting the body on fire.
Despite knowing the perpetrators early on, police only identified the victim days later through forensic tests. A procedural error by Avshaev, who identified himself as "Emil" during a search, led to the arrest of another suspect with the same name. In a recent court hearing in Haifa, two suspects accused of obstruction were released to house arrest, while Avshaev and Abramov remain in custody pending further proceedings. Defense attorneys are currently reviewing the investigation file.
