Four Family Members Charged in Brutal Murder and Arson of Yoav Gelboin in Israel
The Haifa District Prosecutor's Office filed serious charges on Thursday against four family members from Hadera for the brutal murder of 53-year-old Yoav Gelboin. The indictment accuses Emil Avshaib, a 46-year-old former prisoner, of intentional murder under aggravating circumstances. Alongside him, his brother-in-law Ruslan Abramov, 36, is charged with arson and obstruction of justice, while Avshaib's son David, 22, and sister Ela Avshaib, 47, Abramov's partner, face obstruction charges.
According to the indictment, on May 21, Emil Avshaib picked up Gelboin and drove him to the Haifa area near the Zichron Yaakov interchange. After stopping, Avshaib returned, exited the vehicle with a knife, and stabbed Gelboin at least 59 times, including wounds to the heart, lung, and deep cuts to the neck and other body parts. Following the murder, Avshaib disposed of the knife and confided in his son David, with whom he cleaned the Volkswagen Polo used in the crime to remove blood and evidence.
Later that night, Avshaib and Abramov bought gasoline and returned to the crime scene to set Gelboin's body on fire, attempting to destroy evidence. The fire spread to nearby vegetation, burning about a quarter of a dunam. Ela Avshaib also participated in cleaning the car the next day to further obstruct the investigation.
The investigation began after drivers reported smoke near the Haifa coastal road on May 22, the day of the Jewish holiday Shavuot, leading to the discovery of Gelboin's stabbed and burned body. The Haifa police unit used advanced technology and operational methods to identify the victim and suspects. Investigators revealed the crime was a coordinated family operation. Avshaib, released in late 2025 after serving a decade-long sentence for seeking revenge for his brother's murder, has 11 prior convictions for violent and other offenses.
While Avshaib remained silent during interrogations, Abramov's confession to an undercover officer implicated him. Evidence includes surveillance footage, DNA findings, and forensic reports. The motive remains unclear but may relate to past events involving Avshaib. The prosecution requested extended detention for the men and house arrest for Ela Avshaib. Defense attorneys are expected to review the extensive case file and likely agree to postpone the hearing while the suspects remain in custody.
