The conviction stems from an incident in May 2020 when Israeli forces were operating in the village of Ya'bad to arrest wanted individuals. According to the ruling, Abu-Bakar climbed onto a rooftop and threw a half-brick, weighing between nine and eleven kilograms, at IDF soldiers with the intent to kill. The projectile struck Sgt. Ben Yigal, causing his death. Following the attack, Abu-Bakar fled to his home and feigned sleep to evade capture. After the forces departed, he returned to the scene, collected pieces of the brick, and discarded them to obstruct the investigation. He was convicted of intentional homicide, equivalent to murder in the West Bank, and obstruction of justice. The military prosecution stated it will continue to pursue justice against those who harm the country's security, its citizens, and IDF soldiers.
