Flydubai Plane Diverted to Saudi Arabia After Mid-Air Incident

A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an incident onboard, which included passengers subduing an attacker. Initial reports suggest a crew member shouted "Allahu Akbar" and ran towards the cockpit, leading to a struggle where passengers intervened and the pilot was injured. The aircraft transmitted an emergency code and altered its course, causing significant alarm among passengers and their families.

Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with one passenger stating, "We subdued the terrorist, we need help." Another passenger reported that a knife-wielding individual attempted to hijack the plane, causing the aircraft to lose altitude and experience severe turbulence. Passengers recited prayers, fearing a crash, before Israeli passengers and crew members managed to overpower the assailant.

The flight, FZ1073, was en route to Ben Gurion Airport when it entered Jordanian airspace and then turned towards Saudi Arabia. Flight tracking data indicated the plane initially broadcast emergency code 7700, signifying a general emergency, and later, possibly code 7500, which denotes unlawful interference, though this was not officially confirmed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and senior security officials held consultations amid concerns of a potential hijacking. However, some assessments suggested the distress code might have been activated due to an altercation between the pilots. Flydubai has not yet released an official statement confirming the exact circumstances of the diversion and emergency code activation.
