Flydubai Plane Diverted to Saudi Arabia Amidst Hijacking Scare

A Flydubai flight en route to Tel Aviv from Dubai was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday following reports of a potential hijacking attempt. Eyewitness accounts describe panic and shouting on board after an armed individual reportedly tried to seize control of the aircraft. One passenger's mother recounted that her daughter described a knife-wielding assailant, leading to intense turbulence as passengers feared a crash and recited prayers. Israeli passengers and crew members are said to have subdued the attacker.

Another passenger stated that the hijacker attacked the pilot, but was overpowered by other passengers, with everyone except the pilot reported to be in good condition. The flight, FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, initially broadcast an emergency code (7700) while over Jordan, indicating a general emergency. Some tracking systems later showed a code (7500) signifying unlawful interference, though this remains unconfirmed by official sources. The plane descended significantly before turning back towards Saudi Arabia.

While the exact cause for the emergency codes and diversion is unclear, initial assessments suggested a possible altercation between the pilots. However, the reported hijacking attempt has led to security consultations involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz.
