Netanyahu's Election Warning Sparks IDF Concern Over Escalation Risk

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent public warning that "before the elections, our enemies will try to attack us" has reignited discussions within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) regarding the risk of a new escalation, though no direct link has been established. This follows an earlier assessment by "Maariv" military correspondent Alon Ben David, who reported that the IDF feared a flare-up on one of Israel's fronts amid upcoming elections. Ben David suggested that the IDF believed Netanyahu was not interested in a complete cessation of hostilities, potentially leading to an escalation, possibly in Gaza, which could disrupt election schedules. Netanyahu's latest statement has brought these concerns back to the forefront, although the publication emphasizes that current intelligence does not confirm a direct connection between the Prime Minister's remarks and the previously voiced IDF fears.

Netanyahu made his remarks at Tel Nof Airbase, stating, "There are signs that before the elections, our enemies will try to attack us." He then issued a direct warning to Israel's adversaries: "Don't mess with us. Our long arm will reach you anywhere, anytime."

In response to the Prime Minister's statement, opposition leader Yair Lapid urgently requested information from the Prime Minister's office regarding the security situation. Lapid sought clarification on whether a specific, real threat existed and how the state planned to ensure the elections proceeded on schedule without interference. Lapid later called for a meeting involving Netanyahu, Shin Bet head David Zini, and Central Elections Committee chair Judge Noam Solberg, asserting that "when the prime minister in a democratic country publicly speaks of a threat that could disrupt the elections, all involved parties must receive full information."

The Prime Minister's office stated that Netanyahu had instructed his military secretary to brief Lapid on recent developments. Separately, a clandestine visit by Netanyahu to the United Arab Emirates has drawn attention. Italian publication "Il Foglio" reported that during Netanyahu's meeting with UAE President Muhammad bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi, Saddam Haftar, chief of staff of the Libyan National Army, also arrived in the UAE and reportedly met with Netanyahu. "Maariv" noted Haftar arrived on a civilian aircraft used by the Libyan military. These reports gain context amid assessments that Hamas operatives abroad are working to relocate infrastructure from Turkey and Qatar to Libya.

Defense Minister Israel Katz also commented on the ongoing efforts to target Hamas leadership outside the region, stating, "Hamas leaders abroad are also in our sights, no one among these despicable murderers who played a central role in the October 7 massacre should die peacefully in their beds. It is our duty as a people and a state." He alluded to a failed assassination attempt in Qatar, saying, "They managed to escape once due to a mistake, but the next time will come, and they too will be sent to the depths of hell."
