Shin Bet Informs Gadi Eisenkot He Will Not Receive Personal Security
The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) has informed Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the National Unity Party and a candidate for prime minister, that he will not receive personal security at this time. The agency stated it is prepared to offer party leaders, including Eisenkot, intelligence and security envelopes, but this does not include personal protection.
The National Unity Party confirmed the decision, stating, "National Unity Party! With Eisenkot was updated today that at this time the Shin Bet does not intend to provide security for the party chairman and candidate for prime minister, Maj. Gen. (res.) Gadi Eisenkot, contrary to publications on the matter and the position of the advisory committee."
The Shin Bet explained that following a decision by the Ministerial Committee on Security for Party Leaders, a rapid assessment was conducted within the agency to formulate an immediate response. Following consultations with professional staff, Shin Bet Director David Barnea approved several measures to provide a security response for party leaders. Shin Bet intelligence units will offer monitoring and intelligence support, including threat assessment around each party leader. Additionally, any party leader seeking private security can hire an approved private security firm licensed to carry weapons, even without specific intelligence or a concrete threat.
The Shin Bet's security division will coordinate with party leaders and their private security teams to guide and improve the existing security measures. The agency will also conduct periodic assessments of the threat level for each party leader to determine the appropriate level and implementation of security.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party filed an urgent petition to the High Court of Justice on Thursday, demanding that Shin Bet Director David Barnea and the Israeli government immediately provide security for party chairman Yair Golan. The party criticized the decision, stating, "The government and Shin Bet are abandoning Yair Golan's life."
