Israel Imposes West Bank Lockdown for Sukkot Holiday Amid Security Concerns

Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the IDF to implement a general closure on the West Bank, effective immediately and lasting for the upcoming week, coinciding with the Sukkot holiday and its intermediate days. The decision, based on recommendations from military officials, aims to bolster security in light of recent attacks and the heightened tension surrounding the holiday period.

During the closure, Palestinian laborers will be prohibited from entering Israeli settlements in the West Bank for work. However, essential workers will be permitted entry into industrial zones under specific security directives from the Central Command. No exceptional permits will be granted during this period, except for those mandated by Supreme Court rulings.

The head of a nursing home facility has appealed to Defense Minister Katz and Health Minister Chaim Katz, requesting an exemption for Palestinian caregivers. He warned of an immediate collapse in the nursing care sector across dozens of Israeli geriatric facilities, as approximately 940 caregivers from the territories are employed in this field and are crucial for the daily care of elderly residents, including basic tasks like bathing and dressing.

The facility director noted that these caregivers typically receive security clearance and are usually exempted from closures through their employers' licenses. He expressed concern that their immediate return to Palestinian Authority areas could leave thousands of dependent elderly individuals without necessary care.
