IDF Boosts West Bank Forces Ahead of Sukkot Amid Security Concerns

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is significantly increasing its troop presence in the West Bank ahead of the Sukkot holiday, deploying an additional division to bolster security. This decision, made by IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, comes in response to recent attacks, rising nationalist crime, the upcoming olive harvest, and upcoming elections, all contributing to heightened tensions.

Despite the security concerns, holiday events such as tours and visits to heritage sites and holy places will proceed as planned, with tens of thousands of visitors expected. The IDF's heightened readiness involves 27 battalions in the West Bank, ten of which are specifically tasked with defending the seam line, supported by the Air Force. Additional forces, including elite Maglan unit soldiers, have been deployed to the area.

Coordination meetings between the IDF, police, and Shin Bet have been held to ensure a unified response to potential incidents. Division 98 has taken command of the Gush Etzion and Judea brigades, operating alongside the existing Judea and Samaria Division to conduct defensive, offensive, and counter-terrorism operations.

The IDF had initially considered reducing forces in the West Bank to allow reservists to be home for the holidays but opted to increase readiness due to the prevailing security situation. This includes maintaining regular battalions on alert and having brigade commands ready for rapid deployment.

Beyond the threat of organized terror infrastructure, security officials are particularly concerned about lone attackers, who are harder to track. The IDF is emphasizing operational discipline to its troops, anticipating that militants may seek vulnerabilities during the holiday period. The cost to repair breaches in the seam line fence is estimated at 1.2 billion shekels, though this budget has not yet been approved by the political echelon.
