Massive Fire Engulfs Hurovit Forest, Arson Suspected
A large fire broke out on Saturday in the Hurovit Forest near Beit Shemesh, rapidly spreading due to strong winds and reaching the treetops at its peak. Firefighting forces were dispatched to the scene, with eight firefighting aircraft and ground crews battling the blaze for hours. Following extensive efforts, control was established over the fire, which consumed approximately 600 dunams (about 150 acres) of brush and vegetation. No nearby communities were reported to be in danger.
A special investigation team has been formed to examine the circumstances of the fire's ignition, and initial suspicions point towards arson. The investigation has been transferred to the Israel Police. Firefighters and additional forces will continue to work through the night to extinguish remaining hotspots and ensure the area is safe.
As a result of the fire, the Hurovit Forest will remain closed to visitors on Sunday due to ongoing firefighting operations, smoldering areas, and the risk posed by fallen trees.
