Massive Forest Fire Near Beit Shemesh Burns 600 Dunams; Arson Suspected
A large fire erupted in the Haruvit Forest near Beit Shemesh, rapidly spreading due to strong winds and reaching the treetops. Significant firefighting forces from the Beit Shemesh region, along with a surveillance helicopter, were dispatched to the scene. At the peak of the operation, eight firefighting planes were deployed.
Despite the fire's scale, which consumed approximately 600 dunams (about 150 acres) of brush and vegetation, the Fire and Rescue Services confirmed that nearby communities were not in danger. After an extended effort, firefighters gained control of the blaze and began extinguishing remaining hotspots.
Haruvit Forest will remain closed to visitors on the following day due to the risk posed by fallen trees and ongoing cleanup operations. Following instructions from Jerusalem District Commander, Fire Chief Shmulik Friedman, a special investigation team was established to examine the circumstances of the incident. The investigation has been transferred to the Israel Police on suspicion of arson.
