Massive Fire Engulfs Haruvit Forest, Suspected Arson Under Investigation

A large fire broke out Saturday in the Haruvit Forest near Beit Shemesh, rapidly spreading due to strong winds and reaching the treetops. Firefighting forces were dispatched to the scene, with eight firefighting aircraft and ground crews battling the blaze. After extensive efforts, control was established over the fire, which consumed approximately 600 dunams (about 150 acres) of brush and vegetation.

Firefighters from the Beit Shemesh region, supported by additional units, worked to contain the flames and evacuated hikers from the area. The fire's spread into the treetops necessitated the deployment of more resources, including the eight aircraft and a reconnaissance helicopter for situational assessment. Police and emergency services also assisted the firefighters.

While the fire posed no immediate danger to nearby communities, officials urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services unobstructed access. After hours of fighting, fire officials announced that control had been achieved, though crews would continue working through the night to extinguish remaining hotspots.

A special investigation team has been formed to examine the fire's origins. While the investigation is ongoing, arson is currently suspected. The case has been transferred to the Israel Police. The Haruvit Forest will remain closed to visitors on Sunday due to ongoing firefighting operations, fallen trees, and remaining hazards.
