Susan Sarandon, Hannah Einbinder Among Dozens Arrested at UN Protest

Actress Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, star of "The Ex," were among dozens arrested during a protest outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday. The demonstration, organized in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address at the UN General Assembly, called for an end to U.S. support and arms for Israel's war in Gaza.

Protesters, including the group "Jewish Voice for Peace," blocked nearby roads, carrying signs that read, "Fund people, not bombs." Local police asked demonstrators to clear the traffic routes, but some refused and sat on the road, leading to the arrest of at least 30 individuals, including the two actresses.

Other celebrities present included Elliot Page, Cynthia Nixon of "Sex and the City," and Sarah Silverman. Einbinder had told The Guardian prior to the event that her participation stemmed from a moral obligation as a "Jew, an American, and a human being."

This is not Sarandon's first controversial statement regarding the conflict. The 77-year-old actress previously drew widespread criticism in 2023 for remarks that appeared to downplay the Hamas attacks of October 7th. Sarandon had echoed an antisemitic trope, suggesting the massacre was a result of "the ongoing Israeli occupation."

Sarandon has stated that these controversial views have negatively impacted her career, leading to canceled film roles and agencies refusing to hire her.
