Susan Sarandon Arrested at UN Protest Against Israel
Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon was among dozens arrested outside the United Nations in New York on Thursday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the General Assembly. Hundreds of protesters gathered to demonstrate against Israel and the war in Gaza, with many sitting in the road and blocking traffic.
Sarandon, along with other prominent figures from Hollywood including Cynthia Nixon, Elliot Page, and Hannah Einbinder, participated in the demonstration. Nixon and Sarandon have been vocal critics of Israel's actions in Gaza in recent years.
Einbinder, an Emmy winner, stated she felt compelled to join the protest as a "Jew, an American, and a human being" and called for the U.S. to cease funding the war. Other celebrities present included musicians Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, and "Saturday Night Live" star Sarah Sherman.
The protest was organized in part by Jewish Voice for Peace Action. Demonstrators carried signs and chanted for a ceasefire. Public officials and political activists also joined the celebrities in the demonstration.
